Using Almond Flour?

Has anyone tried cooking or baking with almond flour in place of regular white flour? I bought some but haven't had too much luck. It's such a healthier alternative if it works!

I have not used almond flour, but I have used ground almonds in place of plain flour. I have also used coconut flour - coconut flour is not ideal, it is very absorbent, and the texture isn't quite right. You can counteract this by using arrowroot with the coconut flour.
Check out this website - it has lots of delicious deserts using almond and coconut flour http://www.dessertstalker.com/photo-tag/coconut-flour/

I have never even heard of almond or coconut flour. That sounds interesting. I'll have to look into that and find some recipes that call for it that my family might like. I'm not a great cook, but I do like to experiment, especially with healthier options.

I have never heard of almond or coconut flour. They are def something I will look out for during my next trip to the store. Shaun, thanks for that website. My question is, if used would the food absorb the almond flavor or does it disappear like when you use wine, etc as stock?

Nope. I have used whole grain flour, but never as a full replacement. I will usually use it half and half with all purpose white flour to preserve the flavor & outcome of the original recipe.

I have used almond flour but never on its own, always in gluten free flour mixes. I am honestly not sure you can use it on its own as it has quite unique capabilities (and very different from wheat flour and its gluten content). It is mostly used for cakes as you can't, on its own, make a dough out of it. And then you need to use quite a number of eggs to keep it from crumbling ... But indeed, very healthy !

I've tried coconut flour , but I find it extremely hard to locate in stores. I think I would just stick to using unbleached flour.

It is quite hard to find in the average grocery store. It will be sold in most health food stores and you can easily buy it online. Coconut flour is a lot more expensive, but you use a lot less because the high fiber content makes it very absorbant.

You can get almond flour on amazon. We use it all the time for gluten free meals.

I make my own almond flour, it works out cheaper. I buy whole unblanched almonds in bulk and pulse in a coffee grinder. I then sieve out any lumps to produce a fine meal.

How much do you pay for almond flour on amazon?
