Dealing with asthma

Postby racechick79 » Sun Apr 22, 2012 2:24 pm

Does anybody else have problems with asthma? I have lived with it since I was about eight years old and while I have found ways to work around it, there are certain exercises that are more difficult for me to do without having problems. Just wondering if anybody else lives with this and if there are any tricks out there that you do for it.

I thought I had it, my doctor thought I had it. I think too many people get miss diagnosed with asthma, I know I was.

I was put on several different inhalers, I didn't understand why so I eventually stopped using them. I never had an asthma attack.

I have exercise induced asthma. When I am doing cardiovascular activities, my airways swell until I feel as though I am breathing through a straw. I am not able to oxygenate my body properly. I have an inhaler that I use just prior to exercising to promote relaxation of the airways so they do not get inflamed. I have had great results since I started using it. I can breath freely, and my face does not end up redder than a tomato!

I had asthma when I was younger, I grew out of it in my early teenage years. My advice would be to make sure you have an inhaler when you are training, in case of an attack.

I also had it when I was younger and then did quite well for awhile. It does seem to be flairing up again especially when I am exercising and doing weight training.

I have not thought about taking my inhaler prior to exercising. That might do the trick for me. It seems that usually I end up waiting until it is too late and then it takes me forever to recover from the attack. I think I might try to take it prior to exercising tonight and see if that might be a better bet. Thanks for sharing!

Breathing correctly when exercising is crucial otherwise you will have breathing problems and difficulties.

Yes, it is possible to grow out of it. They say that many people do. I wasn't one of the lucky ones though! There is a family history of it for me though. I have actually been talking to some other people and they were saying that it is possible to condition your lungs with asthma, so I am hoping that trying a few other tactics I may be able to do better with it over time.

I have mild asthma, and it hardly gives me any problems with exercise now (although it was worse when I was a kid). My trigger is cold air. Whenever I do exercise in cold air, my breathing begins to get pretty tight. I know this, so I always have my inhaler ready if I have to do exercise in cold air.

My advice is to simply know your triggers and to deal with them accordingly. Can anybody else give advice on their triggers for attacks and how they deal with them?

I have had asthma since childhood and although it has improved a lot as i have got older I still need to use my inhaler every now and then, especially in cold, damp weather. I would suggest having a puff of your inhaler before you exercise, this makes a huge difference to me. Do you have or could you get a preventative inhaler to use? If your asthma is interfering with your life it is not properly managed so go back to your doctor about it.
