Postby Jeremy Green » Wed Apr 18, 2012 7:49 pm

More and more people today are taking supplements as a way to increase the time they need to gain muscle. They act as a catalyst and can be found at many nutritional stores. So which one is the best to use and what are the side effects that are attributed to using them?

Vitamin D is one of the best supplements for health and recovery. The Eastern Europeans still set the standards when it comes to training and recovery, they supplement with lots of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is important if you want to optimise your recovery between workouts.

Oh, that's very interesting. I started to supplement with Vitamin D with aggressive doses after series of colds last winter. The results are amazing. Not only I don't catch any cold and even if some virus is around I fight it like a breeze but also my level of energy is much higher. Now when there is a lot of sunlight I stopped but certainly I will go back to it after summer.

Vitamin D is a critical nutritional compound. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a myriad of health problems including osteoporosis and cancer. Vitamin D will strengthen your immune system and your bones. The best source of vitamin D is the sun, but supplements are useful too.

Shaun: what dose do you recommend? I've read some guidelines and tried to stay on the safe side, thought I took much more than a regular physician would recommend. I took 5000 UI a day with organic virgin sesame oil.

The research which was conducted in the Soviet Union concluded 50 ng/mL is an optimal dosage for maximising athletic performance. The dosage is also linked to weight, if you are heavier you might need slightly more or slightly less if you are lighter.

You can get a blood test to see where your levels are at. Then as you build it up you can get on a lower dosage. Also, the sun is not the devil. 15-20 minutes a day will do you some good. Just don't be out there for hours without protection.

Most of us do not get enough sun, especially those of us who do not live in a sunny climate. 20 minutes a day is good for you, you can stay in the shade the rest of the time. I think there is a lot of scaremongering about the sun, our ancestors never had sun lotions and they didn't suffer from cancers.

But, when is something too much of a good thing? What if you are taking vitamin D supplements and wind up getting a lot of sun over a holiday weekend? Are there any side effects to getting too much vitamin D? I know that if you get too much of other vitamins and minerals, it can be detrimental to your health. THoughts?
