Can eating peanuts make you lose weight?

Postby wameyo » Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:03 pm

I have read a lot of information about peanuts and all I get is just confusing. Some say it helps you gain weight while others say it actually helps you lose weight. Can anyone clarify on this?

The information I have heard/learned about peanuts is that it is a good source of protein; so I guess that eating enough of it would help you to gain weight if that is what you are looking to do. I have heard that it is a good tactic to use to lose weight because if you eat it as a snack rather than a candy bar or something high in calories; you will be filled up quicker and not be getting all of the empty calories. I am not an expert, but this is what I have heard.

I'm not sure how peanuts can help you lose weight. I regard peanuts as the vermin of nuts. Peanuts are actually a legume, not a nut. Peanuts are high in protein but they wouldn't be my choice of food for weight loss.

I don't think this is a matter of causation. Peanuts do not MAKE you lose weight. Nuts in general (a small handful) are a healthy choice for a snack. Perhaps if you eat a candy bar every day and replace that candy bar with nuts, you could lose weight. I don't see how just adding peanuts (if you are already nutritionally balanced) would help.

You're right, it wouldn't. In fact, peanuts are very high in calories. A handful of peanuts should not cause any harm but eating lots of peanuts is not a good idea.

I do not think peanuts directly help you to lose weight persay. Peanuts are listed in many areas as a healthy snack. It is a better alternative than many of the foods that people eat for snacks. And, of course, it happens to be a healthy source of protein which is good news for everyone.

Peanuts are a good source of protein, as are all nuts so maybe they could help with weightloss as part of a protein-rich diet. Obviously go for the plain varieties rather than salted :)

Never heard about peanuts helping lose weight.

It's a well known fact that they are great for those looking to find protein rich foods. There is nothing like a good peanut butter sandwich when looking to add protein to your diet. Plus, it gives you a lot of calories.

Thus, I am surprised it would be considered a weight loss food. It just doesn't seem like it, but I am not nutrition expert!

Many people are allergic to peanuts, peanuts are among the most allergenic foods on earth. Peanuts also contain aflatoxin - aflatoxin is toxic to the body, one of the most harmful chemicals to be found in food. All in all, peanuts are not good for health or weight loss.

Yes. Nuts contain loads of healthy fats (which btw are not to be feared, epsecially while cutting), they keep you satiated for a long time and taste pretty damn good also.
The only thing to keep in mind though, is to mind your portions, as they are very calorically dense due to the aforementioned fat content.
