Any good calorie calculators

Postby fitnessk » Tue Apr 17, 2012 1:53 pm

Does anyone know of any good resources for determining how many calories I need to maintain my current body weight? I would then eat less to lose weight. I know before I have seen calculators that consider your current weight, height, age and activity level.

I started using MyFitnessPal. You enter your age, height, current weight, and current activity level. Then you can adjust it for whatever you'd like to do-- lose weight, maintain weight, or gain weight. It then tells you what your calorie allowance for the day is, and you can also enter whatever exercise you do that day.

Pretty handy so far!

I use Sparkpeople. They have an app for smartphones as well as a website that offers free diet plans, fitness tracking, and more. I have tried a couple other apps in the past, and have found this one to be most useful and accurate.

www.sparkpeople.com

Above is the link if you would like to check it out!

I think the best barometer for measuring how many calories you need is the scales. Step on the scales, if your weight remains the same, you know you are eating a maintenance level of calories. Calorie calculators vary and are arbitrary in my opinion

Thank-you for the suggestions all. I also wanted to thank the person who mentioned SparkPeople. I had someone refer me there before for various great tools and such but I had forgotton the name.

I found weightlossresources very useful for this and the site has lots of other great features too. Check it out, they offer a 24hr free trial, no card details or anything required.

Thanks Olivia, I think I will try out myfitnesspal. I tried sparkpeople before but I just couldn't stick with it, so that makes it useless at that point.

I don't have a suggestion that would be better than Shaun's for maintaining calories, but if you would like a suggestion for an application to help you track your calories, I'd suggest MyNetDiary.

It's available on both Android and the iPhone.

I also use MyFitnessPal, it's really easy to use, there is a community and you can track everything you need to track.

MyFitnessPal is pretty decent. Most online calculators are extremely inacurate, so don't always rely on the statistics they show you.
